Prickly Pears

It is a succulent plant that can reach 3-5 m in height.

The fruit is a unilocular fleshy berry with numerous seeds (polyspermy), whose weight can vary from 150 to 400 g. It derives from the ovary adherent to the inferior floral receptacle. Some authors consider it a false aril. The colour changes depending on the variety: yellow-orange in the Sufarina variety, purple and white in the Sanguigna and white in the Muscaredda. The shape is also very variable, not only according to the variety but also in relation to the time of growth: the first fruits are rounded, later ones have an elongated and pedunculate shape. Each fruit contains a large number of seeds, in the order of 300 to 160 g of fruit.
